There’s been a lot of talk recently of how media is to move forward. Will it be hyper-local? Will it be completely independent? Do we need funding from the beginning? Can’t we just do it for the love of the content? Must we focus on iPhone-apps or Priuses? Do we need an image of the overly-snobby, not-listened-to, and completely entrenched in old media elite in order to start something new? Must we wear flannel all the time and go to every hipster party we hear of? What makes those people better than the frats or sororities? Why is it put up with? They aren’t the truly independent, the movers, the doers. They honestly don’t know what people like us want to listen to, or read.

We do.

And we aren’t alone. Just because a group of people are broadcasting into the clouds doesn’t mean that anyone cares or is listening.

I’m no longer going to be defined by the recent string of failures in my life. I’m not going to sit back and be told I’m not good at what I love. I’m going to keep doing it. I’m going to start something new. I’m launching a new project. Consider it a cross between College Humor, Engadget, and Pitchfork. We care about good music, good modern culture, good tech, and good books. Let’s start something. Are you with me?

I have nothing smart to say about this. This video is ridiculous, weirdly executed, and thoroughly fun to watch.

Okay. One-and-a-half things to say. But they’re not even very smart.

I think there are two sane reasons for a Big Act to be on a Big Label today:

Economies of Scale
The one thing that is, by definition, almost impossible for indies and individuals to achieve on their own.

Platforms for Spectacle
Sure, you can do amazing, SRL-like things on your own, but going big can mean unusual access to resources, talent, and corporate insanity to make stuff like this happen.

Nonsense like Lady Gaga traipsing around in a fetishy, Manga/Fifth Element/Alien/Matrix mashup will not change the world, it won’t cure your Aunt’s cancer, and it won’t find you a job at NASA. It won’t even teach you the basics of synchronized line dancing.¹

It’s unapologetically sold-out, asinine, and way way over-the-top.

But, you have to admit: it’s a pretty fucking grand bit of creativity and circus. And, although I have nothing smart to say about this, I think it’s a terrificly enjoyable artifact of today’s corporate and cultural zeitgeists. And, yes, in the same way as that execrable Black Eyed Peas record, it’s just really, really fun.

Oh HELL no. The 1996 Nickelodeon production with Michelle Trachtenberg, Rosie O’Donnell, and an amazing cameo by Eartha Kitt was one of my favorite movies as a kid. In fact I still think it’s a damn good movie and would watch it right now if I still had a VCR to stick the neon orange VHS tape in.

First Ella Enchanted, now this. America, can’t you stick to your new-fangled Jonas Bros and Hannah Montanas? Must you bastardize MY childhood?

I maintain fond memories of harriet the spy, but i don’t remember the movie at all, just the wonderful feeling of watching it. however, i have no memory of them turning ella enchanted, my favorite childhood/tween book, into a movie. why would they do that? why would they spoil such a beautiful story with musical numbers, unnecessary plot additions, and awful writing? i bet the never made that movie, and boy am i thankful for that.
